Huckabee: Kick out the U.N.
“It’s time to get a jackhammer and to simply chip off that part of New York City,” said Huckabee, “and let it float into the East River, never to be seen again!” That remark got him a standing ovation, and Huckabee went on to suggest de-funding the U.N. entirely.
“It’s time to say enough of the American taxpayer’s dollar being spent on something that may have been a noble idea, but has become a disgrace!” said Huckabee. “It has become the international equivalent of ACORN and it’s time to say enough!”
Huckabee continued, suggesting that the U.N. be handed over to one of the nations that attacked America. “Let’s end the diplomatic excesses that these people enjoy,” he said. “Let any country that is willing to spend the money that the United States is hosting–let them have it. Give it to the Saudis and let these diplomats suck the sand out of the Saudi desert for a few summers and see if that’s where they’d like to go, and make their ridiculous speeches.”
I actually think it wouldn't be the worst idea for the U.N. to find a new home. The security requirements for that many heads of state are pretty taxing on post-9/11 New York City, and it couldn't hurt to have the organization based in a country that doesn't arouse such strong feelings in the vast majority of the world's population.
That said, I don't quite get what point we'd be proving by sticking the Saudis with the event and the ACORN comparison doesn't make too much sense beyond that fact that they're both "institutions that Mike Huckabee doesn't like."
Update: U.N. Dispatch's Matthew Cordell says the security issue is bogus:
First off, the stringent security requirements and the accompanying costs are only a burden on the city one week a year. At most other times the security perimeter of the UN rarely extends beyond its grounds. The economic benefits, on the other hand, stream in every day, as the UN draws in droves of diplomats, press, NGO types, and business leaders to spend money in NY hotels, restaurants, cabs, shops, and on and on. Mayor Bloomberg's office has said that the United Nations adds $2.2 billion a year to the economy of New York City and creates 18,000 jobs. On top of that, the current renovation of the UN headquarters is expected to bring in over a $1 billion to U.S. businesses. If I were a New Yorker, I'd be up in arms about a suggestion that would lead to more money being drained from the city.
Fair enough. For the record, I don't think the United States should "kick out" the U.N. or withdraw from it or any of what Huckabee was suggesting. I do think that it couldn't hurt for at least the General Assembly to be held in a somewhat more neutral site, but I'm sorry this was seen as a "silly side-swipe" at the United Nations.

Mike Huckabee Is Exactly Right!
As a proud American I am so damn sick and tired of seeing Obama running around the world apologizing for us while the so-called 'diplomats' in the UN attack us incessantly. Why in the world are we financing this group of losers who take our money and revile us inside our own country? The UN is no friend to the US but is a useless, parasitic organization that needs to be expelled. Now!
Ignorant
The UN is not supposed to be anyone's friend. That is the whole point. If you refuse to allow people to criticize American policy, then you are no friend of democratic ideals.
The UN certainly has immense problems with producing results, and requires serious reform, but to ignore the institution is to isolate America from the world. Something the last administration did quite well. And is the type of unilateral, self-serving, irresponsible, myopic policy that Huckabee is now selling to make headlines and a name for himself for 2012.
Moving the UN away from the
Moving the UN away from the US would be a quick way of ensuring reduced significance for it (as well as a loss of a tourist attraction for New York city). Plus, you'd have all the hassles of trying to negotiate another neutral space for it elsewhere, agreeing on a site (and you can bet the third-worlders will want their say on that), and so forth.
The UN's role is not to play cheerleader for the United States - sorry if there was some confusion on that part.
As for "useless", the UN serves as both a valuable forum, and as a clearinghouse for humanitarian efforts that would become tangled up in issues of nationalism were it not there.
un corruption (analogy to ACORN)

Ex-Prosecutor Targets Corruption at U.N.
"The alleged crimes include bid rigging of multimillion-dollar contracts for fuel, food and helicopters; petty bribery; and millions in overcharges for such things as office curtains in Kenya and Lipton tea in Sudan. "Corruption is not unique to the United Nations," he said in an interview. "But the U.N. is in some sense unique because of its geographical breadth. It's at risk for a lot of reasons."
United Nations
The UN has gradually lowered itself to the lowest common denominator of its membership. Look at the Human Rights Council over the last 15 years for an example. I don't know if disengagement is the answer, but lowering US support to a per capita amount would send a strong message. Legitimate criticism is valid. Subsidizing a platform for the Libya, Cuba, Venezuela, and others of the world to publicize bombastic statements is not a good use of time or taxpayer money.
You're right I mean EVEN WE
You're right I mean EVEN WE WERE ALLOWED TO RECENTLY JOIN THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL. AND WE TORTURE PEOPLE!
Don't be ridiculous everyone, the UN does exactly what it's supposed to do - slow down people from bombing the crap out of each other, provide a forum and coordinate human rights operations (albeit poorly and with weak mandates).
The UN gave them 15 minutes, blame the MEDIA for covering it so much if you really need someone to blame. But the idea that we should set them adrift into the East River is frankly Palin-esque. I think Huckabee, Palin etc actually live in a parallel universe where the laws of science, social sciences and basic tenets of reality don't exist.
These leaders get to talk in front of the world once a year - most of the countries in the UN walk out on them as a sign of disrespect. I don't see what you all think is so objectionable about Venezuela talking to a nearly empty room or even more telling a room with just Equatorial Guinea, Bolivia, Sudan, Eritrea, Angola, Laos, and a few other small players. What will they do? Call us Poop-heads and then ask for more aid money?
Huh?
But without the UN, where would Huckabee and the militarists his comments pander to get fake legitimacy for the countries they'll try to invade?
To extend the logic...
Some in the UN are scumbags so we should kick them out?
Does that mean I should reject America just because some in Congress are scumbags? These folks too authorize wars of aggression, torture, etc.
